What this site does and does not do with its visitors’ data, and what it looks after for accessibility.

Cookies and measurement

This site sets no cookies and does no tracking that knows who you are. Visits and page speed are counted by the cookieless measurement of Vercel, the site’s host: no identifier is kept, only the page, the country, the browser and the type of device. If your browser says it does not want to be tracked (Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track), the measurement is not loaded at all.

Forms and accounts

There is no contact form, account, comment or newsletter on the site; no personal information is asked of visitors. The email address is never written plainly into a page and is kept from automatic harvesters.

Third parties

Fonts and images come from this site’s own server; the pages load no advertising, no social media plug-in and no other third-party script. Where a page has a video, it loads from its provider only when you play it.

Hosting

The site is hosted by Vercel Inc. Like any web server, Vercel may keep technical logs (such as IP address and time of request) while serving pages; these are subject to Vercel’s own policy: Vercel privacy policy.

Images

The night lights are drawn from NASA’s Black Marble 2016 data; NASA imagery is not copyrighted in the United States and NASA is credited as its source. The photographs are from Buğra Öngen’s personal archive. Source of the night lights: NASA Earth Observatory

Accessibility

The site aims at level AA of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.2): full keyboard navigation, visible focus, a structure that works with screen readers and sufficient text contrast. If reduced motion is on in your operating system, or you use the switch in the footer, the motion on the page stops.

Questions

If you have a question about privacy or accessibility, or want to report a barrier, write through the contact page.
